Smokey: September 25, 2010

In case you hadn't noticed, there was a long gap between posts this week. Foster mom & dad took ANOTHER trip---this time to Hilton Head and we (Maddie, Luigi & me) got to go to kitty camp. Kitty camp is what foster dad calls the BOARDING PLACE. Even though we get our own window to watch the birds and all the people and animals coming and going, it's no fun for us. We are always happy to see our mom & dad walk up the sidewalk to take us home. They tried to make us feel better by telling us how hot and humid it was there. I actually think that they were as happy to be back home as we were :-)

I saw that the Planned Pethood where you were found one day was in Toledo.

MEET SMOKEY AND BANDIT!

Smokey and the Bandit were adopted as kittens to be companions for each other, and after nine years happily living together with their family, suddenly found themselves homeless, sitting in a cage at PetSmart’s adoption center. Separated from their loved ones, surrounded by other strange cats, confined, confused and frightened they only had each other for comfort. So they are among our featured cats, because we know it will take someone very special who will want to adopt a nine year old cat, and commit that they will love and care for them for what we hope will be ten or more years. Many shelters would not even accept cats of this age, because of the many kittens and young cats that are more adoptable. But Planned Pethood rescued them as kittens, and has rescued them again in hopes of finding that special person who will see the many advantages of adopting a “middle-aged” cat. They are more mellow, less demanding and less destructive than energetic kittens. Their personalities are fully developed, and they are both very loving cats. Smokey is more reserved, but once he trusts you he will nudge you for affection and smother you with kisses. However, I don't recommend him for a family with young children. Bandit is just a big bundle of love at 15 pounds. He rolls over so you can admire his (big) tummy and purrs and purrs with contentment. Since cats can live well into their late teens and early twenties with proper care, they can give you many, many more years of faithful companionship and unconditional love.

Bandit was very lucky to find a home in July as a companion for another rescue cat, named Moses!

Smokey is doing just fine without him, in case you're wondering, and he has two kitty companions in his foster home. He would be fine as an only cat since he doesn't like to compete for affection, or should also adjust to a new "brother" or "sister" kitty in a new home.

Smokey has been adopted by a wonderful family who wanted to add an adult cat to their home. He joins another Planned Pethood cat, Jingles, and a dog, Hana, adopted from the Toledo Humane Society.

Thanks to everyone who has followed Smokey and Bandit on their quest to find a permanent home. Special thanks to their adoptive families who opened their hearts and homes to two very special kitties! We hope that others will do likewise, for there are many, many cats who deserve a second chance at life and love.
